Catching trout, salmon and steelhead requires the fisherman to replicate the food sources available to the fish. In stream fishing fishermen need to know what food is present, in what quantities, and when! The focus of this website is on one particular category of food, fish eggs. Trout and salmon are predisposed to eat or strike the roe of other species. They even eat roe of fish from their own species, and it appears to be an innate instinct to do so. The food value of fish eggs is far greater than an equal volume of most other foods such as aquatic insects.

The secret to catching fish is to understand the triggers that entice them to feed or strike and to replicate those triggers in the fishing process. A good imitation of the eggs fish feed on will entice more strikes than a poor imitation so paying attention to details makes a difference. Truly a fisherman can have everything perfect in the fishing process and be out-fished by a buddy simply because the final element in the buddy's process is better. The fly he fishes imitates better.
